    Etymology: βδελυρός is mostly explained as formed from βδέ-ω with a λυ-suffix (as in θῆ-λυ-ς), but this is hardly possible. A verb in - εω does not give a stem in to which suffixes can be added. Then, a suffix - λυ- probably does not exist: θῆλυς seems rather built on an λ-stem (DELG, Frisk); and - λυ- was certainly no longer productive (Chantr. Form. 121). Here an λ-suffix was seen in βδέλλων τρέμων η βδέων, βδέλεσθαι κοιλιολυτεῖν H. (forms which are doubted) and in βδόλος `stench' (Com. Adesp. 781; cf. γαλεόβδολον, s. γαλέη). But these form are as difficult: there was no stem βδε- to which a suffix could be added. Also, it seems not clear from the meaning that βδελυρός was derived from βδέω (in H. forms are often explained with μισέω): that later the verb influenced by the meaning is easy to understand. Therefore the word cannot be explained as a Greek formation. It then seems probable to analyse βδελ-υρ-, both components of which are prob. Pre-Greek: βδ- and the suffix - υρ- (s. Beekes, Pre-Greek).

    Etymology: The papyrusrind was supposedly called after the Phoenician harbour Byblos, from where it was brought to Greece. But as this town was Phoen. Gbl, Acc. Gublu, Hebr. Gebāl the Greek form is difficult to understand. E. Masson, Emprunts 101-7 concludes that the word is of unknown origin and the town was called after it. Objections by Hemmerdinger, Glotta 48 (1970) 253 (unclear). Therefore Alessio Studi etr. 18 (1944) 122f. assumed that the word was Pre-Gr. Furnée 364 gives evidence for υ\/ι in Pre-Greek (the forms with - ι- appears to be old, not due to late assimilation; cf. Kretchmer, KZ 57, 253). Pre-Greek origin is also strongly suggested by the prenasalised forms (hardly expressive). - Cf. πάπυρος.

    Etymology: It is now known that silk was also produced in Greece (Kos and Asia Minor) before it was introduced from the east; see Hemmerdinger, Glotta 48 (1970) 65. He cites Isidorus of Sevilla on the origin of the word: Appellatus autem hoc nomine ab eo quod evacuetur cum fila generat, et aer solus in eo remanet (Etym. VII, 5, 8); an explanation which I fail to understand. So the word will indeed be of Anatolian origin, as its structure suggests. An original *p\/bamb-ūk- (with suffix - uk-, probably with long ) would fit exactly the structure of Pre-Greek. Schrader-Nehring 2, 381ff., DNPauly 11, 347ff. However κότταβος indicated not only the game itself, but also several objects and movements used. (Anakr., Pi., trag., com., hell.)

    Etymology: As the original meaning of κότταβος is unknown, all etymologies are in the air. In form one compares: κοτ(τ)ίς `head, back of the head', κόττειν τύπτειν H., κόττος `κύβος etc.' (s. vv.). - Studniczka BphW 14, 1299 and K. Schneider P.-W. 11: 2, 1529 understand `provide with a head' referring to the slice ( πλάστιγξ) above on the kottabos-stander. But Mastrelli Boll. di Studi fil. e ling. sic. 5 (1957), Estr. 25ff. starts from κόττος `κύβος, cube', older app. `ἀστράγαλος, swivel'; with κότταβος would be meant the curve of the hand when throwing the cup. The origin would lie in the western Mediterranean (cf. on κοττίς). - Lat. LW [loanword] cottabus `slapping blow' (Plaut.; cf. Friedmann Die jon. u. att. Wörter im Altlatein 46ff.).     Etymology: The word has been compared with OHG (h)rimfan `wrinkel, curb, rūmpfen' as IE * kremb-, * kromb-. On the ending - βος and the α-vowel cf. a. o. σκαμβός, κλαμβός (s. v.). The accent is remarkable and may point to original substantiv. function. - Fur. 238 compares κραῦρος `dry, frail, fragile' (s.v.), without prenasalization and with for β (on which see Fur. 228 -242), which is convincing; note Frisk s.v. κραῦρος "ebenfalls mit bemerkenswerter Barytonese." Fur. 343 further adduces κόμβος [note the accent!] ὁ κόνδυλος. καὶ ὁ καπυρός; κρομβότατον καπυρώτατον. κατακεκονδυλωμένον H. Further perh. κράβυζος (s.v.). So without a doubt a Pre-Greek word. - Fur. 283 analyses κράμβωτον and connects κράμβος λάρος H.[`mew'] what I do not understand.

    Etymology: With πείθω agrees formally exactly the Lat. themat. root-present fīdō, - ere, IE * bheidh-ō; semant. agrees however the Lat. verb with middle πείθομαι (cf. confīsus sum). Formal identity we find also with the Germ. verb for `wait' in Goth. beidan, OHG bītan etc.; the semantic cleft ('wait (for)' from `trust' or `conform, restrain' ?) is however not yet bridged. The causative too Goth. baidjan `compel', OHG beitten etc. `urge, demand' is semantically divergent; after Specht KZ 66, 205 ff. an agreeing.
